Childhood Cancer Rates in Infants are Increasing

Childhood cancer has grown dramatically in recent decades, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In fact, since 1975, the total rate among youngsters under the age of 19 has climbed by 27%. Surprisingly, the total adult cancer rate fell throughout the same time period, causing many specialists to wonder why the disparity exists. Check out the article by the best Pediatric Oncologist in India – Dr Vikas Dua who is explaining why the childhood cancer rates in infants are increasing.

What Are the Most Common Cancers?

While the prevalence rate of childhood cancer has increased, the majority of the increase appears to be due to a 35 percent increase in leukemia since 1975. While leukemia is the most frequent kind of cancer in children, it is not the only one that is becoming more common. Soft tissue cancers forming in muscle and bone have increased by 42 percent, while non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s has increased by 34 percent.

What is the Cause behind This Childhood Cancer?

It is believed that environmental factors are to blame for the rise in cancer rates among children, says Dr. Vikas Dua. Concerns about air, the environment, and pollution have grown in recent years. There appears to have been a significant increase in many forms of childhood malignancies, whereas adult cancer rates have continued to fall.

Reason for concern?

While rising cancer rates are likely to worry parents, some experts say the statistics may be deceiving. Doctors are better able to identify cancer because of advances in technology, and some feel that these enhanced tests are partially to blame for the rise in positive diagnoses. Furthermore, the 5-year survival rate for childhood cancer has significantly improved in recent years.

When childhood cancer services are provided, however, more than 80% of children with cancer can be cured. Dr. Vikas Dua, the best Pediatric Oncologist in India working to ensure you receive the best treatment.
